The song is a minor blues. It has a number ideas that came together for the vibe of the tune. The initial head you hear was going to be an interlude. Instead we played it over and over, learning it, then decided it should be the head. You'll hear the original head at the end of the song. I have one other blues, on Incarnate, that has a different head in and head out. Once we learned the written part it was a one take tune. (Another one take song on the record is the title track).

A question I get once in a while is something like "did you record these at a studio?" I think people do the math of 10 records in 3 years and wonder about the logistics, cost, studio time etc. This record was done in the same studio as four of the other records. I usually booked the studio for 5 or 6 hours and we would play through the song's written parts then record between 1-3 takes.

The form is a 12 bar minor blues once the head is completed. The head is similar in a lot of ways to Celebration of Soul and Cycles of Sound. One thing I like to do is use the same melodic material in multiple places on an album, hence the open string stuff, descending chords, lines based on intervals found in L&S, CoS, CofS etc.

It was Rodney's suggestion that we play the interlude as the head of the tune. It was also his suggestion that we each take part of our solo as duets with Jeremy. Both ideas were perfect and make this song what it is. Often, Rodney's guidance in the studio had a light touch. "Do one more of those" or an arrangement suggestion were about the extent, but the suggestions were always spot on.
